From James Cook to the 21st century, Oceania remains etched in our collective western collective consciousness to the idea of great journeys and the unknown.
This will be the main theme of Oceania – Travelling through the 5th continent. The exhibition crosses the great ocean in the footsteps of eighteenth-century explorers, in search of the aesthetics of Oceanian art and its cultural context made up by ethnography and archeology. The rich collections of the Royal Museums of Art and History (Cinquantenaire Museum and Museum of Musical Instruments) and the Royal Museum for Central Africa will be featured in this exhibition.
More than 200 objects from New Zealand, Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia, Hawaii and Easter Island, as well as old maps and world maps, models of ships and archives, will be on display for the occasion.
